Simple way to feed the humanity

Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared. Buddha

What’s the first thing you think of when you see the poor and homeless people ? Do you feel like giving something to them or you give a damn to them. When I see these kind of people the first thing that comes in my mind is to help them at any cost. There are so many simple ways to serve them which is really essential to them. But we are never aware of this.

Some people are born in rich family whereas some are in poor. But whom is to blame if they born in such a family who have hand to mouth problem. In Buddhism we believe that it is their Karma. We also believe we all are interdependent, so it is our moral responsibility to help beings born with deformation or retardation, who are paying their karmic dues to ease their potential sufferings, we aim to elevate their poor livelihood by all possible means. But if we lend our hand just by giving small part of what we have that would bring immense pleasure to them.

Now a days we are so busy taking care of ourselves or rather say our children, our family etc. We care about our happiness in the mean time we forget that there are many people who need our love, care and support too. We throw lavish party, we spent thousands for buying clothes to our children, we love spending money on expensive cosmetics but we never think of helping the poor and homeless people. We never realize that it is not that they are poor it is our attitude towards them that makes us feel they are poor.

One week ago I planned to help poor and homeless people in a simple way. I want to give used but good clothto these people. I know the clothes  which is of no use to me can really be a big help to them. I share my feeling with my Dharma friend Sonia Guillot. She told me to visit the website of APHO. All Pervading Helping Others Organization (APHO) was founded by Abbot Dakpa Yeshi on 2008. It is nonprofit organization which has been serving meals and clothes to disabled and poor. They are doing it on auspicious Buddhist spiritual days and events by feeding scores and sometimes hundreds of poor who have difficulty meeting their food needs. They are serving them four times a month. Finally on 2nd November I reach at APHO’s place for donating clothes. They always give meal at 12 noon only.  But before 12 noon lots of disable and poor people queue outside the gate. They are really poor. At 12 noon we start to serve them food . After taking food I distribute clothes to them individually. People seem very happy with the clothes.

My happiness has no boundaries but the question that come in my mind is how nice it would be if we help them in some income generating work. They need it most. How long can they go seeking food and clothes from others?. If you want to lend your hand visit this website http://www.apho.org.np . Check your cupboards you can see many clothes dumped for years. Why not to give it to such organization? There is no other happiness as serving others.  Being human try live for others as well.

  3. Exceptional post encouraging and inspiring. We at our church during the month of December and January we host 180 homeless people (the coldest period in California. All meals are served and shelter provided. Blessed are those who see the Lord in the poor. My best regards. Jalal Michael

  4. Very commendable and a nice post to make others think about those of lesser means. I give locally and it breaks my heart to see so many in need, even in this country. You mentioned people spending on parties etc., but I heard today the US military is spending 8 million a day for the war on ISIS. Imagine the money being spent to make life better for ALL in the world?
