Each year we all celebrate our birthdays in different ways. While celebrating such special moments in our lives, oftentimes, we do not realize that there are those who are ordinary but for their circumstances would not know when and where we celebrate. For such people, we just pass through life without affecting them in any way. The truth of the matter is that they are ever grateful and appreciative for every kind gesture extended to them.
On July 10 I plan to celebrate my sister’s birthday in a different way. I suggest her to celebrate it with the kids of the Bourgandi Children’s Home. This orphanage is at Ramhiti which is nearly 2km from the Bouddhanath. My brother-in-law accompanied us.
Every child greeted us on this special day with some hugs and kisses. The children are aged between 5 to 21 years. They are from different districts of Nepal. Most of them are from the Himalayan region. As the children welcome us I can see a charming person standing by the gate. Yong and dynamic Ghaman Tamang is a kind-hearted guy who is taking care of all 30 children in the children’s home. On my first visit, he explained to me the inspiring story about the children’s home. I can see tears coming through his eyes and his murmuring voice explaining the plight of children and how he rescued them. I find him humble and honest. In my first meeting, he left an undying impression.
It was a very special moment for the children too as they feel a sense of belonging. It was a thing of joy to celebrate with these kids as they all danced and had fun. They sang a birthday song. Surprisingly they made beautiful birthday cards and other paintings and gifted them to my sister. We are overwhelmed by the talents that children own. Our hearts filled with joy and our eyes with tears.
I feel spending time with them and merely listening to them is more important and precious instead of spending time in restaurants only waiting for food. And while birthdays are celebrated with midnight surprise parties at homes and in hotels over dinner, there are some who plan otherwise. It was indeed a special birthday for us. I will always treasure the moment in my life. To share your happiness with these kids is the best thing you could ever do on your birthday than throwing a lavish party.
Losing your parents is not easy, however old you are. It is not their fault to become orphans. If you are celebrating a birthday why not celebrate with these kids? Give chance to your kids to meet these kids and learn about the different life they are living. Why don’t you donate some amount to these kids?. If this is not possible why don’t you share some time with them? . All you need is to have a compassionate heart.
