Cell phones play an integral role in our life. However, the convenience they offer must be judged against the hazards they pose. However, a major question is how relevant is to use while driving. Though people are aware of the fact that using cell phone while driving is fatal they cannot stop themselves. If their cell phone rings, they get distracted this may cause serious accident and in some case death too.
Distracted Driving is any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving. The types of distractions include, using a cell phone, eating and drinking, talking to passengers, reading, texting, adjusting a CD player. Cell phone distractions are becoming common all over the world. Mainly there are two dangers associated with driving and cell phone use. One is texting takes the driver’s attention away from driving more frequently and for longer periods than other distractions. Another is younger, inexperienced drivers may be at a highest risk because they have the highest proportion of distraction related fatal crashes.
There has been a long debate that whether it is good to use a cell phone while driving or not. Supporters of restrictions on driving while using a cell phone say that the distractions associated with cell phone use while driving are far greater than other distractions. Opponents of cell phone restrictions say drivers should be educated about the effects of all driver distractions. The number of cell phone related accidents is on the rise. With more and more research indicating a positive correlation between cell phone use and car accidents, it is important to do what you can to be as safe as possible while driving. While the best way to reduce cell phone related car accidents is to simply not talk on a cell phone while driving, if you find you must make a call while behind the wheel you need to follow some of the rules. Like the use of hands free device such as headset or system that is directly built in your car. These devices are particularly effective if they completely voice activated allowing drivers to keep hands on the wheel while talking on a mobile.
Likewise, if you have to make a call while driving, do not look down to punch in phone number. Also, do not send text message or browse internet as this can impair your ability to drive safely endangering your life and the lives of those you share the road with. Cell phones are particularly dangerous when drivers look away from the road to dial a phone number or read a text message. Similarly, avoid emotional conversations. Drivers can become so emotionally involved in a conversation that they may be less aware of their surroundings and be unable to react quickly. Apart from these, if it is necessary that you take a phone call while you are on the road, it is a good idea to pull off the road to engage in the conversation. Pulling off to a safe area will allow you to focus on the conversation and not risk getting distracted while driving. The most important thing is only use your phone when it is necessary and limit the phone calls you have while driving.
